A recent bicycle accident in Studio City resulted in the death of a 42-year old bicyclist. The bicycle accident victim died at the scene. The accident occurred as the bicyclist was riding his bike west on his way to work, entered an intersection and was hit by a privately owned garbage truck.

Authorities were still investigating the incident and had not yet determined if the truck driver was at fault. According to one source, a total of 31 bicyclists have died already this year in Southern California.

Community members expressed concern and confusion surrounding the accident and hoped witnesses would come forward to help explain what happened or that video of the accident might be available. One community member expressed frustration that there is not more bicycle-friendly infrastructure in the area.

The unexpected loss of a loved one can be both traumatic and devastating. In addition to the emotional harm families may suffer, families may also suffer financial harm following a fatal accident. Families who have lost a loved one may have wrongful death legal protections available to them depending on the circumstances. If another party’s negligence or wrongdoing results in the loss of a loved one, family members may be able to recover compensation including funeral expenses, loss of companionship and loss of support.

Family members of victims of fatal bicycle accidents may face a number of challenges. Because of the difficulties families commonly face following a fatal accident, it is important for them to be familiar with the protections, resources and remedies that may be available to them.
