Driving an automobile requires the driver’s complete attention and focus. It also requires the driver to have all of their senses and reflexes working properly. When a person lets their concentration on the road lapse, while behind the wheel, they risk causing a motor vehicle accident. Likewise, too many accidents are the result of a driver being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and thus unable to drive safely.
A recent fatal car accident in Orange County appears to have been caused, at least in-part, by people who were driving while under the influence. The accident occurred at about 2:45 a.m. when the driver of a Honda traveled southbound, while in a northbound lane. The Honda collided with a Lincoln, which was traveling in the proper direction. One passenger in the Honda died from the accident, and two others were taken to a hospital in critical condition. The driver of the Lincoln did not suffer injuries.
Following the deadly accident, police were still conducting an investigation, but they initially arrested the driver of the Lincoln. A police sergeant later explained that he suspected that both drivers were under the influence at the time of the accident. Police later released that driver from jail, as they continued to try to figure out how the accident unfolded.
This accident shows the enormous consequences that can result from a bad decision, like driving while under the influence. In addition to facing criminal charges, drunk drivers who cause accidents like the one in this case, can face civil liability for the damages that they caused to accident victims.
Driver negligence can come in many forms, and driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is one of them. Victims of a drunk driver should understand how to hold that person accountable under the law.
