Breaking down on the Interstate or getting into a single-vehicle crash often requires drivers to get out of their vehicles near where traffic is moving. This poses obvious dangers that can result in tragedy. Sadly, a 32-year-old California man died recently, the apparent victim of a hit-and-run after he was involved in a single auto accident. As police continue their investigation into the incident, the loved ones of the decedent are likely hoping that the driver who struck him is found.

The accident occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 in Richmond. The victim was found at approximately 12:25 a.m., and the California Highway Patrol pronounced him dead at the scene. According to police, he got out of his car after striking the center divide. He purportedly attempted to cross the westbound lanes to get to the right shoulder, but was struck before he could get across.

Investigators closed off that area of I-80 for nearly two hours. Witnesses reported to investigators that the man was struck by several cars, but none of them stopped. The California Highway Patrol is now asking for people to come forward if they have any information about the accident.

When an auto accident like this occurs, it may be very difficult to determine who is at fault. If the driver who hit him comes forward or is found, he or she may face both criminal charges and a civil wrongful death claim. Family members of the decedent may pursue such a claim to seek compensation for their loss. While doing so will not lessen their emotional pain, it may provide some much-needed financial relief and a sense of closure.
